General description
This is a survey of bright points (beacons) with extreme intensities in the transition region, first discovered by SPICE (Fludra et al. 2021). The goal is to detect more of these events for statistical studies, to characterise their evolution and thermal and magnetic properties, and establish the connection to coronal bright points. These measurements will help explain the formation and heating of bright points on small spatial scales, from the transition region to the corona.
Default SOOP duration: minimum 6 hours, but can be profitably run for up to 12 hours.
Pointing requirements: Any pointing on quiet Sun disk within +/- 30 degrees from disk centre is useful. Larger off-points reduce the spatial resolution and are progressively less useful.
Observations requirement (baseline)
Instrument | Mode | Comment |
---|---|---|
SPICE | Medium FOV, medium cadence: SPICE_Survey, 8 rasters, 6 hours in total.
12.1 MiB/raster. Total telemetry = 96.8 MiB | Lines: N IV 76.52 (1 window) |
EUI | HiRes & Full Disk * minimal: 2 hours of HRIEUV and HRILYA at 1 min cadence * ideal: 4 hours of HRIEUV and HRILYA at 30s cadence
Besides, that there will be the FSI synoptic program: - 6 hours of FSI174 at 10min cadence - 6 hours of FSI304 at 60min cadence | |
PHI | Standard observing programme of the day is usually OK. An ideal scenario would be: HiRes & Full Disk PHI_HRT_NOM_0: HRT nominal mode at 1-2 minute cadence for 1-2 hours (same time interval as EUI HRI). Full disk at 30 min cadence for rest of the time. |
Science objectives
SAP objective | Target | Duration | Opportunity (e.g., orbital requirements, solar cycle phase, quadrature ...) | Operational constraints | Additional comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1.2.1 What mechanisms heat the corona? | Quiet Sun | 6-12 hours, repeated several times on different days | Preferred Sun-Earth line to allow SDO and other near-Earth observatories to participate. However, Orbiter stand-alone observations are also useful and possible any time. | So far, only one instance on one day has been run | |
Instances run / planned
LTP06 (run):
8 March 2022 (with IRIS, Hinode EIS and SOT, SDO) (SOOP coordinators: A. Fludra, D. Berghmans, S. Solanki)
LTP09 (planned - not run):
Did not run due to s/c anomaly.
